In 1982, two Haitian refugees struggle to secretly get married under the surveillance of sadistic guards at an immigration detention center in Miami.
This story is important to me because it’s inspired by true events, and as an immigrant myself—a crucial story to tell, more specifically telling the truth behind Krome Detention Center. This is a slice of the genesis of Haitians exodus during the Duvalier regime. That time period is referred to as the Haitian Boat People era. The world of Krome is vast, but rien ne sert de courir; il faut partir a point which is why the aim for BOAT PEOPLE is to tell a simple love story between two refugees in one of the most turbulent times in Miami history. This will be a one location shoot, under a tent with candles as our only source of light. A Todd Hiddo painting in the dark.
